My ideas of research has changed as a result of taking this course. Before I became familiar with the terms and process associated with doing a research study, I felt rather uninspired about what researchers do. Now, even though I don't think researching is an area I will find myself, I don't feel as negative towards the word research. I feel I can now read a study with confidence and understanding. I have resources, now, about how to evaluate honest, authentic research when I see it and also know when I don't. I understand the process better and respect those who undertake such an involved process. Realizing all that went into our simulation and thinking about the work needed to actually initiate my study gives me a new appreciation for researchers and the time and effort they commit to their work.
The challenges I encountered were mostly at the beginning of the course when I didn't have much interest in the research process because it wasn't a priority for me. I decided to commit to each week's assignments and do the best I could, even though my sister was hospitalized waiting for a liver transplant in Omaha, NE. My mind wasn't always focused on the work I needed to do but I knew I did what I had time to do, even with little sleep at times, when I wasn't driving back and forth to see her.
As an early childhood professional, I have learned that studies can benefit a single classroom or an entire school of thought. I know that I could do a research study on my students if a question needed answered and an insightful study would answer it. I feel that I could do the job if the situation arose.
Greetings Laurie,
ReplyDeleteGaining an understanding relevant to the terms and process of conducting research is vital. Becoming competent in research holds so many advantages that would benefit the field of early childhood care and education that would produce positive outcomes for children, families, and communities that are attainable and sustainable. I wish your sister restored wellness and good health. And to you, much success in your future endeavors.
Laurie,
ReplyDeleteI too found this class difficult and it took some motivation to read and reread the information. I did learn a great deal about research designs like yourself and understand the process better. You can tell from your blog posts that you are dedicated to building your professionals skills and learning about research is one of those skills. We can better ourselves in our own classrooms by using these research techniques like data collection and adding it's importance to the children we take care of. Great post Laurie, Melissa
Laurie-
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that a lot of us, myself included, felt the same way as you did coming into this class. Leaving it, I give a lot of credit to those individuals who chose researching as their job! I could never do it! I also found this class to be challenging at times, but feel now that I have a better understanding. I wish your sister the best of health and good luck to you as well!

Laurie, it is a struggle to stay focused when you are dealing with "life" issues at home. My grandma that raised me passed away during the end of the course and I could not seem to focus on getting any assignments done for week 8. I couldn't seem to get any understanding of what I was supposed to do, how I was supposed to do it, and I couldn't ask for an extension since I am traveling out of state for the funeral. Coping with it all has been a mind blowing experience.
ReplyDeleteLaurie. Good post I agree with you that we are different and all of us need to be respect, and never label to each others.
